Spanish Language and Culture Immersion Programs
“After graduating from the New Brunswick Community College – St. Andrews Hospitality and Tourism program, I had the opportunity to participate in the TTT Spanish Language and Cultural Exchange program in the fall of 2000. I was scared and uncertain what to expect when I got to Merida . For the following six months I traveled to ancient Mayan sites, experienced different festivals and carnivals, and celebrated different holidays with my Yucatecan family and friends. I went to school in the evenings where I would participate in class discussions, projects and outings. During the mornings I had the opportunity to volunteer at a tourist information center and participated in a five week “Executive Trainee” program at one of the major hotels in Merida . I was thousands of miles away from Canada , my family, friends, and my way of life - I never felt more independent. This experience has been such a positive influence in my life; I was able to learn about a new culture and language; I also learned a great deal about myself and have grown because of it. I would strongly encourage anyone that has an open mind, a great sense of humor and adventure to take advantage of the opportunities that this exchange has to offer.” MARISE CORMIER
In today's internationally focused world, knowledge of additional languages is a great advantage in procuring good employment. In every industry, language proficiency helps professionals to communicate with their clients and colleagues all over the world. Spanish is becoming increasingly important as it is the second most widely spoken language in the Americas .
Many North Americans study Spanish but often find true fluency is more easily achieved by living in a total immersion environment. Daily exposure to Spanish especially helps to perfect oral comprehension and the spoken accent. An added advantage of living and studying Spanish in Mexico is the experiential learning that goes hand-in-hand with language learning.
TTT facilitates many opportunities for students to improve their Spanish language skills and understanding of the Latin American culture.
